Lessons I learned from Bugs the Roach

Wednesday, 14 May 2008 17:36 by Beatrice

When I got into the shower today I ran into Bugs, a cockroach that was hanging out in the shower stall. (btw. Is this picture below a German roach or what do you call this model?). Bugs was sitting on the sort of higher end of the tile, pretty safe from the water splashing down of the showerhead and I thought he would be fine hanging there until I was done. Certainly I wasn’t going to shoo him up and do the “avoid the roach dance” in the shower. You know, this is Florida and occasionally odd outer-world-looking species of things come to hang out in the house and you just sort of try to ignore them hanging in the corner or wherever (until the man comes home, he’s in charge of item removal before it has time to replicate).

Anyhow, so I thought Bugs would be fine if he stayed where he was, but no, he felt that there had to be a better spot to hang out and started to move around. Needless to say, Bugs miss-stepped and got sucked into the water whirl of the drain. He flopped around and did some interesting gymnastics, and low and behold he got back out of it. Then Bugs started to run around, and I started to run around, and then Bugs got sucked into the direction of the drain again. All the while I was just thinking that if Bugs would have stayed put where he was in the first place and maintained, he would have made it through the shower in pretty good shape.

Seems like that with a lot of things in life. When things are iffy, sometimes it is probably better to stay put, keep your mouth shut or don’t start anything until you get a grip on the overall situation. Prematurely scurrying around the shower stall will only cause havoc. Then again, if you do stay put and don’t react, that may backfire on you too. In this case, Bugs just didn’t know which action (do something/do nothing) was the better choice.  Either way I look at Bugs, he is pretty much done for regardless. (Unless he escapes before the man comes home, in this case action would be a smart thing). So the moral of the story is: Did I learn anything? Guess not, but it sure made for an entertaining shower.

Next time, I might put a frog in the shower. I wonder what short story will come of that.
