Fix my Network Wizard - the hidden gem in SBS 2008

Saturday, 5 July 2008 12:21 by Beatrice Mulzer

At first you think this is just soooo SBS, the "Fix my Network" wizard, because it sounds like you can just push a repair button in Small Business Server 2008, and everything magically gets fixed. Well, it's almost that good.

I compiled a list of items that the Network wizard looks for and fixes or alerts, so check it out!

DHCP
DHCP service started?
DHCP scope missing or correct?
DHCP IP exclusion range correct?
If the DHCP Service is installed, re-install it.
DHCP Service set to Automatic?
DHCP authorization and binding

DNS
If the DNS Service is not installed, re-install it.
DNS Service set to Automatic?
DNS Service started?
DNS Service configured correctly?
Do the A and AAAA records exist for the server, and are they accurate?
Does the CompanyWeb CNAME record exist?
Does the CNAME record for the site exist?
Extension Mechanisms for DNS (EDNS) disabled?
Reverse DNS Zone configured correctly?
Forward DNS Zone configured correctly?
Forward DNS Zone for the company domain found (if there is a public FQDN)?
Forward DNS Zone missing a record, create the record.
Are DNS Forwarders being used instead of Root Hint? If so, the wizard warns you, but it does not fix the problem automatically

Logon issues - local
Network adapter configured correctly?
Primary network card new or missing?
Are more than one static IP address on the network adapter?
Duplicate IP addresses on the network?
More than one gateway configured on the network adapter?
Multiple network adapters on the server

Logon issues - remote
Self-signed certificate still valid?
Does Internet Information Services (IIS) have a certificate bound to it?
If a valid trusted certificate exists, bind it to IIS.
If a valid trusted certificate does not exist, bind the self-signed certificate to IIS.
If the trusted certificate is expired, warn that it is expired and needs to be renewed, replace the certificate with the self-signed certificate, and then bind it to IIS.
If the self-signed certificate is expired, re-issue a new certificate, and then bind it to IIS.
If the trusted certificate or the self-signed certificate are updated or changed, rebuild the take-home package, and then warn that it must be redistributed to people who have remote computers or remote devices.
CA Service installed?
Is the CA Service set to Automatic?
Is the CA Service configured correctly?

Where did the Internet go?
Has the router changed?
Router available?
Port mappings correct?

Domain name issues
DNS configured correctly?
External domain configured?
Domain provider credentials correct?

Yikes, what happened to the e-mail?
Does primary SMTP address match server FQDN?
Outbound SMTP IP address valid?
Outbound SMTP credentials correct?

Unable to access e-mail on the internal Web site
Foreign gateway connector to the internal Web site installed and pointing to the e-mail drop directory?
E-mail enabled on the internal Web Site?

RWW
Terminal Service Proxy and Terminal Gateway settings correct?
RPC over HTTP enabled?

Unable to access the network using VPN
Does the VPN security group exist?
Routing and Remote Access service installed?
Routing and Remote Access service set to Automatic?
If VPN was enabled by running the VPN Wizard, is the Routing and Remote Access service started?
Are the Network Policy settings correct?
Windows Firewall port mapping valid?
Port mappings on the router valid?
VPN authentication method set correctly in the registry

Now just think how long it would take you to check for issues using native tools - and here its all with the push of the SBS magic button. What a great tool, thanks SBS team!

And I just couldn't resist, but ummmm, what wizard will fix this?
